ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - The University of Michigan is partnering with the city of Ann Arbor on efforts to reduce and control the area’s deer population.

The Ann Arbor News reports (https://bit.ly/2fi4Hkf0 ) cooperation includes allowing sharpshooters hired by the city to kill deer on university property in four general areas, including Nichols Arboretum.

The university also will consider allowing non-lethal deer management activities on other parts of North Campus during the school’s midwinter break Feb. 25-March 5.

The university is willing to cover 15 percent of the city’s costs, up to a total of $25,000.

City Council met earlier this month and approved plans to control the deer population including hiring sharpshooters to kill 100 deer and trap and sterilize another 60 deer. A hunt last winter resulted in sharpshooters killing 63 deer.
