PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine’s secretary of state office says it’s preparing to recount more than 700,000 referendum ballots on whether to legalize marijuana and whether to add a 3 percent tax surcharge on individuals who earn more than $200,000 a year.
The Portland Press Herald reports (https://goo.gl/9kQezE ) unofficial results from the office indicate the marijuana question passed on Nov. 8 by about 4,000 votes. The tax surcharge appears to have passed by nearly 10,000 votes.
State officials said Monday they plan to announce a date and time for the recount soon. The recounts will be completed by hand and take at least a month. Combined, they’ll cost more than $500,000.
Four states voted to legalize recreational marijuana for adults 21 and older. Eight states and Washington, D.C., have legalized a recreational pot market.
