HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities have identified the man fatally shot by police in western Michigan.

Michigan State Police say an autopsy was performed Friday on 43-year-old David Thelen of Holland. He was killed Wednesday evening in Ottawa County’s Holland Township after sheriff’s deputies responded to a medical emergency call.

Sheriff Steve Kempker says Thelen was holding a large knife and charged a deputy. The deputy shot Thelen after he refused orders to drop the weapon, according to Kempker.

State police officials say autopsy and toxicology results will take weeks to complete. They are investigating the case.
