PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix police officer had to jump out of the way after a car crashed into his patrol car while he was standing outside filing a report.

The officer suffered minor injuries and was hospitalized after the 4:30 a.m. incident on Sunday near 35th Avenue between Baseline Road and Southern Avenue.

Phoenix police Sgt. Mercedes Fortune says the officer was outside his patrol car filling out paperwork for a car towing request when he heard another car coming in his direction at a high speed. The officer and a witness jumped to safety before the car crashed into the officer’s patrol vehicle.

Fortune says the driver of that car was seriously injured. Police believe the driver may have been impaired.

Police haven’t’ identified the driver or the officer.
