MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont Republican Gov.-elect Phil Scott travels to the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., this week for something of a freshman orientation.

The National Governors Association is holding a seminar Wednesday through Friday morning for incoming governors.

Veteran governors will advise newcomers on topics ranging from staffing and organization of a governor’s office to public communications and legislative relations.

Incoming governors also will get some emergency preparedness and response training from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Topics there will include best practices about communicating with the public, establishing roles and responsibilities for key state officers, requesting disaster assistance and using the National Guard and federal military assets.
