CHICAGO (AP) - Four guards at a juvenile detention center in suburban Chicago have been indicted for allegedly encouraging detainees to attack fellow detainees as a form of discipline.

A statement from the Kane County state’s attorney’s office says the guards at the Illinois Youth Center-St. Charles are accused of victimizing 10 individuals in January this year.

The guards were indicted on multiple counts, including aggravated battery. If convicted, the statement says the defendants could face sentences of between probation and five years in prison.

All four posted bond and were released. They were placed on paid administrative leave earlier during the investigation.

The guards were indicted by a Kane County grand jury last week. The state’s attorney’s office announced the indictment on Monday.

It wasn’t immediately known if the men have lawyers.
