OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A powerful Tulsa attorney who donated more than $2 million to his own campaign for governor in 2002 says he is taking a “very serious look” at running for governor in 2018.

Gary Richardson told The Associated Press on Tuesday that if he decides to enter the race, he will run as a Republican.

Now 75, Richardson ran as an independent in 2002 against Democrat Brad Henry and Republican Steve Largent and won more than 14 percent of the vote in the race that was won by Henry.

At the time Richardson promised to make the state’s turnpikes free and fight special interests. He spent more than $2.3 million of his own money on that campaign.

Richardson served as U.S. attorney under President Ronald Reagan before founding his own firm.
