PHOENIX (AP) - Voter turnout for the Nov. 8 general election was the lowest in Maricopa County since 2000.
According to results canvassed Monday, 1.6 million people cast a ballot in Arizona’s most populous county.
Recorder Helen Purcell says 74.4 percent of registered voters cast ballots in Maricopa County.
She figured turnout would be in the neighborhood of 80 percent for the election.
However, Purcell says her department noticed a growing trend: voting by mail-in ballot.
She says 78 percent of county residents voted by mail rather than turning up at the polls.
Purcell lost her bid for re-election.
She presented the general-election canvass to the county Board of Supervisors likely for the final time after 28 years as a recorder.
