HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - There’s still no timetable on when some parks and beaches will reopen on Hilton Head Island after Hurricane Matthew.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported (https://bit.ly/2fe5OmC ) the island is trying to convince tourists to return after the storm.

Town chief engineer Scott Liggett says getting roads reopened is a priority over cleaning beaches and parks. About half of the town’s beaches and parks remain closed.

Liggett said he thinks Islanders Beach will reopen in the next couple of days, but he doesn’t know when the rest of the beaches and parks will reopen.

He says debris is the reason for most of the closings. Town officials have said it could take months to complete debris removal.

Liggett says officials want to make sure facilities are safe before they reopen.
