PHOENIX (AP) - A state task force has found that Arizona has more than 6,000 untested rape kits.

KNXV-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2eDUD5H ) that the Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kit Task Force says the state’s law enforcement agencies have 6,424 untested kits.

Gov. Doug Ducey began pushing for Arizona to deal with its rape kit backlog earlier this year, calling the untested evidence an injustice.

Officials say two indictments have already been made by testing new kits.

The kits weren’t tested for a variety of reasons, such as cases where authorities deemed testing unnecessary because the victim knew the assailant and there was no question about the suspect’s identity.

But the samples are now considered a valuable tool in identifying serial offenders.
