BOWDOINHAM, Maine (AP) - A 44-year-old Maine man has been charged with boating under the influence in the wake of a crash in which police say he hit an island in the Kennebec River.

Police say Douglas Stevenson, of Bowdoinham, crashed early Sunday in an incident that left two women seriously injured.

Police say Stevenson was operating a 29-foot Four Winns power boat north on the Kennebec when it ran aground near the southern end of Swan Island. Three passengers were on board, and two of them received serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The injured women were taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

It was unclear on Thursday if Stevenson was represented by a lawyer.
