NEW YORK (AP) - Authorities say a 45-year-old woman is dead after she was gunned down in New York City, and police say they believe she was an innocent bystander.
Police found the woman with a gunshot wound to her chest on Wednesday afternoon. She was declared dead at a hospital.
The woman has been identified as Maribel Cavero-Reyes of the Bronx.
No arrests have been made.
An investigation is ongoing.
The woman’s niece tells WNBC-TV her aunt had been on her way to pick her up from school when she was shot when gunfire erupted on East 154th Street. WCBS-TV reports police say Cavero-Reyes was hit by gunfire from two groups of men who were arguing in the middle of the street.
