MCMINNVILLE, Ore. (AP) - An arbitrator has reinstated a Yamhill County sheriff’s deputy who was fired for taking home a stun gun.

Arbitrator Andrew Roberts reduced Marc Brodeur’s penalty to 21 days of unpaid leave and awarded him back pay for the months he was out.

The Yamhill Valley News-Register reports (https://is.gd/kxHke7 ) that Sheriff Tim Svenson fired Brodeur in late January for dishonesty. Both sides agree that Brodeur tried to conceal the fact that he had accidentally taken the weapon home during a three-day weekend.

The arbitrator decided the sheriff lacked sufficient cause for such a harsh penalty.

The union said there was no evidence that Brodeur was a habitual liar in his nearly 10 years as a sworn officer.

The sheriff said he disagrees with the ruling, but will treat the deputy with respect.
