HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Attorneys for a Hattiesburg couple found guilty of filing false tax returns say once again the government did not have enough proof of the crimes of which they were convicted.
Federal prosecutors had challenged Charles Bolton and Linda Bolton motion for a judgment of acquittal or a motion for a new trial.
The Hattiesburg American reports (https://hatne.ws/2fKPZqW) the response was filed earlier this week in U.S. District Court’s Mississippi Southern Division.
The Boltons have requested oral arguments in the case.
Linda Bolton was found guilty in September of five counts of filing false tax returns from 2009-13. Charles Bolton, former Forrest County chief deputy, was convicted of the same charges as well as four counts of tax evasion.
