SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) - Surprise police say a 23-month-old boy has died after allegedly being thrown to the floor by a caregiver for crying and refusing to eat.

Doctors said Adam Aguilar III had a serious brain injury and police said the boy died early Friday morning.

He was hospitalized after being found not breathing, and police arrested Lizette Yadira Moreno on suspicion of felony child abuse.

Sgt. Norm Owens said police will consult prosecutors about possible additional criminal charges.

Police said Moreno initially denied any abuse but later said she got mad at the boy and threw him to the ground twice.

Moreno remains jailed and court records don’t list she has a lawyer who could comment on the allegations.
