SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The mother of a woman killed in a shooting that led to a West Valley police officer’s dismissal says the agency deserves a second chance to earn the public’s trust.
Melissa Kennedy told the Salt Lake Tribune (https://bit.ly/2fJ8ddf) Sunday that everyone she holds responsible for her daughter’s 2012 death is no longer employed by the department.
She says she is impressed by new police Chief Lee Russo.
Twenty-one-year-old Danielle Willard was fatally shot by Officer Shaun Crowley after he thought she was going to hit him with her car.
Prosecutors found the shooting unjustified and the department’s narcotics unit was disbanded.
The city settled a wrongful-death lawsuit with Kennedy last year for $1.4 million.
Kennedy’s remarks come as the department deals with the death Sunday of 25-year-old Officer Cody Brotherson.
