MADILL, Okla. (AP) - The Chickasaw Nation said it is ready to invest in a once-popular resort area along Lake Texoma in Marshall County.

It has been 10 years since a private development group purchased Lake Texoma State Park. The group tore down the 106-room lodge in 2009, leaving 67 cabins standing, according to the Journal Record (https://bit.ly/2eFDhaW ).

The Chickasaw Nation purchased about 62 acres of land near the lake and wants to develop a hotel, 300-game casino, restaurant and gift shop, and as many as 10 lakefront/boating cottages.

The tribe’s commerce secretary, Bill Lance, said the project can’t start until the tribe gets the land put into a federal trust, which will allow for the operation of a casino. The tribe is still working on its land trust application, and Lance said it likely won’t be filed before President Barack Obama leaves office. Since taking office, Obama has put 500,000 acres of land into the trust.

Marshall County Chamber of Commerce executive director Johnna Harding expressed concern about the long timeline, saying that groups in the past have come in and promised to do large developments near the lake. Harding said she’d like to see the Chickasaw Nation at least tear down the cabins.

“With the state that the government is in, who knows how long (the trust approval) can take,” Harding said.

There are approximately 6 million visitors to Lake Texoma per year. Lance said the tribe hopes the lake development will serve as a way to expand tourism operations.
