NEW YORK (AP) - The president of New York City’s Health and Hospitals Corporation is planning on stepping down at the end of the month.

Mayor Bill de Blasio released a statement Monday thanking Dr. Ramanathan Raju’s service. Raju was appointed to the post by the mayor in 2014.

City officials say Raju had wanted to resign and that the move was expected.

Stanley Brezenoff, who is currently the Chair of the Board of Correction, has been chosen to serve as interim president of the public hospital system which is facing a budget shortfall.

The mayor has announced plans to overhaul the faltering system with new subsidies that would expand health care in “high-needs communities.”
