LEXINGTON, S.C. (AP) - Authorities accuse a 37-year-old Columbia woman of strangling her mother and leaving her 82-year-old grandmother alone with the body.

Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon announced Monday that Daphaney Smith is charged with murder as well as abuse of a vulnerable adult. He says investigators believe Smith killed her mother, 54-year-old Denise Hollingsworth, between last Tuesday and Sunday after an argument.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher says Hollingsworth died of asphyxiation.

According to an arrest warrant, the crime occurred at the home Smith shared with her mother and grandmother. They lived in the Lexington County area of Columbia.

Smith remains in jail. A judge denied her bond Monday.

It’s unclear if she has an attorney.
