GALLIANO, La. (AP) - Lafourche Parish authorities have arrested 25-year-old Golden Meadow man in the beating death of a 64-year-old Galliano resident.

Sheriff Craig Webre said in a news release Monday Cameron Sands faces a charge of second-degree murder in the death of Wayne Matherne. Sands remains in the parish jail on a $500,000 bond.

Webre says a meal-delivery worker found Matherne unresponsive at his home Friday.

Webre said Sands told detectives he’d gotten in an argument with Matherne and the older man told him he was going to get his gun. Sands said he was scared, so he pushed Matherne onto the sofa and hit him twice in the head with his cane.

Online jail records do not list an attorney for Sands.
