MADRID (AP) - Las Palmas forward Sergio Araujo has avoided jail time despite being sentenced to nine months in prison for refusing to undergo a breathalyzer test.

The Argentine player will not have to serve time because he has no prior criminal record.

In Tuesday’s court ruling, the player also had his driver’s license suspended for two years.

Araujo denied wrongdoing for the Sept. 26 incident, saying he was set up by police officers who asked him to drive a car to safety after he and his friend were approached by authorities.

He drove the car about 20 meters and was asked to undergo the breathalyzer. He said he had told the officers that he had drank alcohol.

Authorities denied the player’s version, saying Araujo moved the car to avoid having it towed.
