HANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Kings County sheriff’s deputies have arrested a man accused of carjacking and attempted murder of a deputy in Central California.

The Fresno Bee reports (https://bit.ly/2flHgbl) Angel Antonio Montes was booked into the Kings County Jail after he was taken into custody Tuesday following a struggle with two deputies, one of whom briefly lost control of his handgun to the suspect.

Sheriff’s spokesman Dave Putnam says deputies were investigating a carjacking when they spotted a man matching the suspect’s description. During a struggle with a deputy, the suspect was able to momentarily gain control of his handgun and tried to fire at the deputy, before the deputy regained control of the weapon.

Monteswas subdued after a second deputy arrived. A stolen truck was found nearby.

Putnam says Montes was later identified by the carjacking victim.
