TONEY, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say a man who was found dead in his torched northern Alabama home in September had been beaten to death.

Citing court records, Al.com (https://bit.ly/2eTqlvU ) reports that 51-year-old Danny Ray Smith’s cause of death has been listed as blunt force trauma.

Smith’s body was burned in his mobile home on Sept. 30 in the Madison County community of Toney.

Twenty-eight-year-old Justin King and 18-year-old Dakota Allen Vickers are charged with capital murder in Smith’s death. Both are accused of beating Smith after entering Smith’s home to commit theft.

State Fire Marshal spokesman Steve Holmes says authorities do not have probable cause to charge the suspects with arson because the cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Neither suspect has hired an attorney.
