PHOENIX (AP) - Planning for a possible new highway in Pinal County is moving forward even though construction funding hasn’t been secured yet.

The state Department of Transportation says it and the Federal Highway Administration decided to begin a two-step environmental review for the North-South Corridor while still pursuing funding for the project.

That’s a change from the previous approach which called for funding to be identified for work on the project to advance.

The corridor spans 40 miles between U.S. 60 and Interstate 10, and ADOT says it could be built in full or in segments once funding has been identified.
