PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) - Short-term vacation rentals will be allowed in residential Prescott areas in 2017.

The Daily Courier reports (https://bit.ly/2ekVqMS ) that the Prescott City Council on Tuesday approved ordinances that will make short-term rentals legal in residential zones and regulate the new industry.

Prescott City Attorney Jon Paladini says the move to legalize rentals in residential neighborhoods comes after the Arizona State Legislature earlier this year approved a bill prohibiting cities from banning the rentals.

To alleviate the impacts rentals may have in residential areas, the council approved an ordinance that requires annual registration fees and limits the occupancy in the homes.

Both ordinances are set to take effect Jan. 1.
