PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Lawyers for the family of former Providence Mayor Buddy Cianci are challenging his fiancée’s claim to a portion of his estate.

WPRI-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2dg3vD6) that Cianci estate’s recently submitted an objection to Tara Marie Haywood’s petition as well as her claim the two going to wed before the 74-year-old died in January from cancer.

Haywood’s lawyer says the objections are “standard legal procedure.” He tells the station Haywood will be seeking a portion of Cianci’s nearly $50,000 probate estate and a share of a non-public trust that represents the bulk of his wealth.

Haywood, in her May petition, said she’s entitled to a portion of Cianci’s estate because she served as caretaker during his final months.

She also sought recognition as Cianci’s common law spouse. The couple was engaged in December 2015 after a nearly two-year relationship.
