PITTSBURGH (AP) - Authorities in western Pennsylvania say fire claimed the life of a man in a Pittsburgh-area home.

Fire crews were called to the Pitcairn residence shortly after 3 p.m. Friday and found flames coming out of all of the doors and windows.

Police chief Scott Farally said a borough officer tried to enter the home but was unable to reach the man because he was “overcome with heat and smoke.”

Farally said the cause of the blaze remains under investigation but it didn’t appear suspicious.

Officials said much of the roof caved in before the flames were extinguished, and the home was considered a total loss. Intense flames melted parts of the siding on the home next door.
