BOWIE, Md. (AP) - Police say an officer investigating carjackings in Bowie fired at a cargo van that rammed a police cruiser.

The Washington Post reports (https://wapo.st/2dhzjEK ) that Bowie Police Chief John Nesky said officers responded to a report of a carjacking in progress early Tuesday found several people trying to steal an SUV and a Mercedes. He says officers caught one person in the SUV, but another fled in a cargo van.

Nesky says the van returned and rammed an officer’s parked cruiser, prompting an officer to fire.

The van fled again, leading a chase into Washington, where Nesky says the driver bailed out. He says police in Washington are holding two people on unrelated charges and police are investigating whether they were also involved in the carjackings.

No one was injured.
