DUBLIN, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say an inmate at an Alameda County jail died violently and his 73-year-old cellmate is suspected in the death.

Alameda County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Ray Kelly says deputies were making their rounds Tuesday when they discovered the body of the 56-year-old inmate in a maximum-security housing unit for inmates with mental illness or behavioral problems.

Kelly says an early investigation showed the two had a fight and that authorities believe the victim was strangled or beaten to death.

The victim had been in custody since January on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon in Union City. The suspect was arrested last Thursday on suspicion of battery and making threats.

Kelly says the suspect will be evaluated by mental health professionals before prosecutors decide on the charges.
