LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles police say a 70-year-old woman is dead after her 40-year-old son threw her out a second-story window then kept attacking after she hit the ground.

Police say Carlota Vargas was declared dead at a hospital Monday, soon after the early morning attack from her son, Fernando Vargas.

Authorities say the two, who had been sharing the apartment for about 10 years, had been arguing when the son threw the mother out the window.

Police Officer Norma Eisenman says Fernando Vargas has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police and deputies reached by phone could not say whether he has hired an attorney who could comment.
