DECATUR, Ga. (AP) - A 24-year-old convicted murderer who cut off his ankle monitor and ran away has finally learned his sentence: life with the possibility of parole plus 40 years.

Taiquan Mitchell shot and killed Marcus Waters in DeKalb County in January 2014. Police say Mitchell was out on bond and never showed up to hear the verdict last week. A jury also convicted Deon Dorsey, who also got life, plus 40 years.

WSB-TV (https://2wsb.tv/2dVSJjH ) reports the victim’s family says they feared for their lives while Mitchell was on the run. A fugitive squad caught him in Columbia, South Carolina.

Mitchell asked the judge for mercy during Tuesday’s sentencing and apologized to Mitchell’s family, who told the court he should get the maximum.

Mitchell wiped away tears as the judge read his sentence.
