PLAINS, Pa. (AP) - A former high school teacher has been ordered to stand trial in northeastern Pennsylvania on sexual misconduct charges involving a 17-year-old girl who was her math student.

Forty-five-year-old Colleen McGarry appeared in a Luzerne County courtroom on Tuesday and waived charges including having sexual contact with a student, corruption of a minor and furnishing alcohol to minors.

Additional charges of unlawful contact with a minor and furnishing alcohol were withdrawn.

Authorities allege that contact between McGarry and the student began last year while the defendant was the girl’s math teacher at Pittston Area High School.

They allege that the two kissed “in a car” several times and physical contact progressed when McGarry stayed at the girl’s house for three nights while her father was away.

McGarry was fired in May.
