PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A 42-year-old man has pleaded no contest to charges he stabbed and critically injured his wife and their 22-month-old daughter last year in their north Philadelphia home.

Stephen Burton entered the plea Tuesday to charges of attempted murder, child endangerment and possession of an instrument of crime.

Thirty-eight-year-old Danecia Berrian tells Philly.com (https://bit.ly/2dbnxZz ) Burton stabbed her 60 to 70 times and stabbed their young daughter in the stomach with a butcher knife. Berrian says he was holding a knife above their 4-year-old son when she tackled him.

Authorities say Burton then took her car and fled before he was eventually arrested in Maryland by police who spotted Berrian’s stolen vehicle.

Burton faces a maximum of 67 ½ to 135 years behind bars when he’s sentenced in January.
