LIVINGSTON, La. (AP) - The Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office says a man was fatally shot by a deputy hours after he had an earlier gunfight with deputies in Denham Springs.

The sheriff’s office says in a news release that 31-year-old Blaine Beason was shot by a deputy who found him hiding in a barn about 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Sheriff Jason Ard says Beason was wanted for attempted first-degree murder of a police officer after a 1 a.m. gunfight with deputies in Denham Springs.

Ard says Beason was pointing a weapon at the deputy, who fired in self-defense.

Ard says the deputy, whose name has not been released, was placed on administrative leave with pay pending an investigation.

Beason was white; the deputy’s race was not disclosed.
