DENVER (AP) - New Mexico State has been picked to win the Western Athletic Conference in a preseason media poll, edging Grand Canyon by two points.

The Aggies received nine first-place votes and 167 points in the poll released Wednesday. Grand Canyon had eight first-place votes and 165 points, followed by CSU Bakersfield at 147 points.

Grand Canyon junior guard Joshua Brown was named the preseason player of the year after averaging 16.5 points per game last season.

Six of the eight teams received first-place votes, with third-place Bakersfield, No. 5 Utah Valley and No. 6 UMKC getting two each. Seattle University, picked to finish fourth, had one first-place vote.

Rio Grande Valley was picked to finish seventh and Chicago State eighth.
