PITTSBURGH (AP) - The alma mater of Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney plans to name an athletic complex and its library after the western Pennsylvania native and his wife.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School will honor the Rooneys by dedicating the Ambassador Dan Rooney Athletic Complex and the Patricia Rooney Library on the school’s Cranberry Township campus.

Rooney, a 1950 graduate of North Catholic, served as the United States’ ambassador to Ireland from 2009 to 2012.

The athletic fields and library will be upgraded as part of an initiative started by Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert and other North Catholic alumni.

Construction is scheduled to begin Nov. 1.

Colbert says the honor is appropriate given how many lives the Rooneys have influenced in the areas of education, civic leadership and athletics.
