STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) - A former Georgia Southern student who was a bouncer has been given a 20-year sentence for fatally beating a fellow student outside a bar.

News outlets report that Grant Spencer was sentenced to 20 years after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter Wednesday, following the August 2014 death of 18-year-old Michael Gatto.

Spencer was 20 years old and off-duty at Rude Rudy’s, a now-defunct Stateboro bar, when he assaulted Gatto, causing fatal head injuries.

Gatto’s death spurred lawmakers to adopt a bill called “Michael’s Law,” which requires Georgia bar employees to be at least 21 years old and bans those under 21 from entering a bar. The family is also working to strengthen the law by requiring more training for bar bouncers, owners and staff.
