MIAMI (AP) - A man who was driving drunk when he struck and killed three people on the side of a South Florida road has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Local news outlets report that 33-year-old Christopher Masferrer was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to three counts of DUI manslaughter.

Authorities say two 17-year-old friends, Caroline Agreda and Anapaula Saldana, had been involved in a minor crash at a southwest Miami-Dade intersection, and Eduardo Hernandez had stopped to help them. The trio was standing by the street when authorities say Masferrer approached at a high rate of speed and hit them.

Masferrer’s blood-alcohol level was recorded at 0.193 and 0.167 percent. Florida law considers a driver impaired at 0.08 percent.
