ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating after a moped rider struck a police cruiser, was thrown to the ground and then hit and killed by another car near Charleston.

Patrol Lance Cpl. Matt Southern tells local media outlets the accident happened on the causeway linking the Isle of Palms to the mainland about 5:15 Thursday morning.

The moped rider hit an Isle of Palms police cruiser parked on the side of the road. The rider was thrown to the ground and struck and killed by a second vehicle whose driver apparently didn’t see the victim in the dark.

The name of the victim was not immediately released.
