BARNEGAT TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - Authorities are probing an early-morning explosion in a trash can in New Jersey.

Barnegat Township police arrived around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.

Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Al Della Fave (fahv) says they saw a cloud of smoke coming from the rubber container on the curb between 81 Village Drive and 82 Windward Drive. Debris was scattered about 10 yards away, but there was no damage to surrounding homes or vehicles.

Della Fave says investigators believe the blast likely was more of a nuisance and not meant to cause harm given the time and location.

The blast comes as the man accused of planting a bomb in a trash can in Seaside Park and a pressure cooker bomb in New York City on Sept. 17 is scheduled to be arraigned.
