FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - A teenager raped on her journey from Mexico to the United States has been sentenced to 10 years to life in prison for killing her newborn in 2014.

The Fresno Bee reports (https://bit.ly/2dN0jLN ) that the now-19-year-old left Mexico to live with her brother in Madera. She entered the U.S. illegally and arrived in Northern California days before giving birth.

She arrived at a hospital with postpartum bleeding. Authorities found the girl’s body under a sink in the home.

Madera County District Attorney David Linn says the baby was stabbed to death. The teen was charged as an adult on a count of first-degree murder. She pleaded not guilty.

Linn says the teen became pregnant when she was raped before crossing the border. The Associated Press doesn’t typically name alleged victims of sexual assault.
