NEW YORK (AP) - Elected officials and others are offering support after the speaker of the New York City Council revealed that she was sexually abused as a child.

Melissa Mark-Viverito told reporters at City Hall on Thursday that she’d been molested between the ages of 5 and 8. She said she’d been victimized by two different people, at two points in time.

The Democrat said Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s remarks about groping women had triggered “very painful” memories.

On Wednesday night, she tweeted that one in five girls are sex abuse victims and she’d been among them. Mark-Viverito, who is of Puerto Rican heritage, used the hashtag “Basta” (BAH’-stah), which is Spanish for “enough.”
