HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Officials say a teen who claimed he was hit with a metal pipe while waiting at a school bus stop and collected over $4,000 in charitable donations made the whole thing up.

The Dauphin County District Attorney’s office says the boy in Lower Paxton Township, near Harrisburg, told officials in October 2015 he was knocked unconscious in the attack and had serious head and neck injuries.

To help defray medical costs, the teen set up a GoFundMe account and raised about $4,300.

The prosecutor’s office says after an extensive investigation, police determined the claims were false.

The 16-year-old was charged Wednesday in juvenile court with making false reports and theft by deception. He was ordered to repay the money.

Anyone who contributed to the fund can contact the county to seek restitution.
