ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - An Albuquerque man who admitted to killing his estranged girlfriend last year will only serve four years in prison.
The Albuquerque Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2dl3RCy) that 37-year-old Micah Criswell received the sentence this week as part of a plea agreement.
Criswell pleaded guilty last month to voluntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence.
Police say 34-year-old Tannis Johnson was found unconscious in November 2015.
Detectives say Criswell had an on-again, off-again relationship with Johnson and had a heated argument with her before she died.
Johnson’s parents urged the judge Thursday to reject the plea agreement.
During sentencing, Criswell denied beating Johnson but apologized to her family, saying he would accept punishment for his role in her death.
His attorney had argued Johnson started the fight and Criswell had been drinking.
