HOLBROOK, Ariz. (AP) - Navajo County authorities say two men are in custody for alleged human smuggling.
They say a county sheriff’s deputy made a traffic stop Tuesday on Interstate 40 near Holbrook and found 14 people inside the vehicle who are in the country illegally.
Sheriff’s officials say 34-year-old Felipe Sales-Melendez and 22-year-old Jose Garcia were booked into the Navajo County Jail at the request of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
It’s unclear if they have lawyers yet.
Authorities say the 14 occupants of the vehicle are residents of Guatemala, Ecuador and Mexico.
One of them told deputies that he had paid $15,000 to be smuggled into the United States.
The 14 have been turned over to the Department of Homeland Security.
