WEST GREENWICH, R.I. (AP) - Opponents of a plan to impose a toll on trucks on Rhode Island’s highways gathered at a truck stop in West Greenwich to protest the plan.
The plan, pushed by Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo, will use tolls to play for repairs to bridges and roads. It was recently given the OK by federal officials.
WPRO-AM reports (https://bit.ly/2eiaEP2 ) about 50 people attended the rally, including both Republican and Democratic lawmakers.
Christopher Maxwell, head of the Rhode Island Truckers’ Association, says he believes the plan will be a key issue in several legislative races. He says he wants to send a message “that we no longer will tolerate this sort of governance.”
