SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Officials say South Burlington is looking to install a solar array on top of an old landfill in an attempt to gain something out of a strip of land that can’t be used for much else.

Vermont Public Radio reports (https://bit.ly/2eig3XR ) the city is collaborating with Encore Renewable Energy and Altus Power America on the project, which seeks to place solar panels on a three-foot soil “cap” on top of the landfill.

Environmental regulators with the Agency of Natural Resources have already approved the plan after receiving assurances from developers that the project wouldn’t compromise the cap.

City Council Chairwoman Helen Riehle says South Burlington taxpayers will save up to an estimated $5 million in municipal and school district electrical costs over the project’s 25-year life.
