The department said in a news release that officer checking on a report of shots fired early Wednesday found the 23-year-old woman in the driver’s seat of a car. Police say she had a gunshot wound in her neck.

Officers say the woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was in critical but stable condition.

Investigators arrested 26-year-old male George Flores of Wilmington, who was sitting in the back seat of the car. Officers recovered a .38-caliber revolver handgun from the vehicle.
