MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (AP) - Berkley County officials have identified the body of a 66-year-old Summerville man who fell from his boat in a canal near Moncks Corner and drowned.

Berkeley County Rescue Squad Chief Bill Salisbury told media outlets that Theodore James Phlegar Jr. fell overboard while fishing with his son.

Salisbury says Phlegar was not wearing a life jacket while fishing on Tailrace Canal.

The son tried to rescue his father but was not successful.

The body was recovered Wednesday as members of the rescue squad, the Department of Natural Resources and the sheriff’s office were at the scene.

Salisbury says the death was ruled accidental.
