BOSTON (AP) - Democratic House Speaker Robert DeLeo says he’s supporting a ballot question aimed at expanding the number of charter schools in Massachusetts.

DeLeo says he decided to back the question because he thinks it’s best for students and the right thing to do.

DeLeo made the comments Thursday during an appearance on WCVB-TV.

Great Schools Massachusetts - the committee pushing the ballot question - is welcoming the support.

The ballot question - which would let Massachusetts add up to a dozen new or expanded charter schools each year outside of existing state caps - has divided top elected officials in Massachusetts.

Republican Gov. Charlie Baker is a longtime supporter of charter schools and an enthusiastic supporter of the ballot question, while some prominent Democrats, including U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, oppose it.
